Molescreening
Moles
A mole check is a dermatological examination used to assess the appearance and progression of naevi to detect early signs of skin cancer, particularly melanoma. It is based on a clinical examination of the lesions, sometimes with the aid of a dermatoscope, and is recommended if a mole changes or for individuals at higher risk.

Moles (or naevi) are mostly benign, but some can develop into melanoma, a potentially serious type of skin cancer. Regular medical checks help detect any abnormality at an early stage.

When and how often should you have a check-up?
To identify warning signs, use the ABCDE rule: A for Asymmetry, B for irregular Borders, C for uneven Colour, D for a Diameter greater than 6 mm and E for Evolution (a change in shape, size or colour). A new mole appearing after the age of 30, or a lesion that bleeds, itches or forms a scab, should also prompt you to consult a dermatologist. As for check-up frequency, an examination every 1 to 2 years is recommended if you have numerous moles, every 6 to 12 months if you have a family history of melanoma, and immediately if any abnormal signs appear. As a preventive measure, adopt the right habits: apply SPF 50+ sunscreen, wear a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing, and have your moles checked regularly by a dermatologist.
