Skin cancer screening

Skin cancer screening is a preventive dermatological examination designed to check the entire skin to identify any suspicious lesions. It enables early detection of various skin cancers, notably melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Early diagnosis facilitates prompt care and significantly increases the chances of recovery.

When should you seek advice?

Screening can detect the three main types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, which is common and slow-growing, squamous cell carcinoma, which is less common but aggressive, and melanoma, which is rare but the most aggressive.

Certain skin changes warrant a consultation, changes in the shape, size or colour of a mole, the appearance of a new mole after the age of 50, a lesion or crust that does not heal, or asymmetric or irregular borders.

Screening is relevant to all skin types, particularly for people with a family history of skin cancer or significant, prolonged sun exposure.
